Job fraud in India has reached alarming levels. Whether it's a WhatsApp message, a Naukri listing, or an email from a "recruiter," scammers have become increasingly sophisticated at making fake job offers look real. Here are 10 warning signs you should always check before responding to any job post.
1. Asks for a registration fee or security deposit
This is the single biggest red flag. No legitimate employer ever asks candidates to pay money โ whether it's called a "registration fee," "training cost," "security deposit," or "ID verification charge." If a job post asks for any payment from the applicant, it is almost certainly a scam.
2. Contact only via WhatsApp or Telegram
Professional recruiters use corporate email addresses, LinkedIn InMail, or official company portals. A recruiter who insists on communicating only via WhatsApp or Telegram and avoids giving you an official company email is a major warning sign.
3. Unrealistic salary for the role
Posts offering โน50,000 per week, โน1 lakh per month for freshers, or any salary significantly above the market rate for that role and experience level are almost always fake. Scammers use inflated salaries to attract desperate job seekers.
4. Generic or vague job description
Real job posts have detailed role descriptions, specific required skills, and clear responsibilities. Fake posts are often vague: "data entry work," "online part-time job," or "earn from home" with no specific job title or skill requirements.
5. Gmail or Yahoo recruiter email
If you get an offer letter or interview call from hr.infosys@gmail.com or tcs.recruitment@yahoo.com, it is fake. All legitimate companies use their own domain for recruitment communications.
